“My Motherʼs Daughter” is a response to the deteriorating traditional family album and the overwhelming need to identify with family to distinguish oneself. By replacing the faces with my own I am creating a kind of recognition, a connection between different places and times to produce a feeling of affiliation to better understand a family history. Like Marianne Hirschʼs article,“Past Lives” a photograph has the capability of connecting with an individual in relationship to the collective memory. I am working “Not to restore a non-memory , which by definition cannot be filled in or recovered” But to adopt and recreate a sense of post-memory; A remembrance of an event that can never be experienced.
